celebrate mom AT THE AGO

Published on May 3, 2017

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and what better time to celebrate all of the amazing women in our lives over an extra special Afternoon Tea? Sloane is thrilled to be a part of The Art Gallery of Ontario’s gorgeous tea service, a member’s only experience with seatings every weekend at 12pm and 2pm. Held in the AGO’s historical Grange Room (also known as The Norma Ridley Members’ Lounge), the space is filled with the kind of old world charm that only one of the oldest standing brick homes in the country could boast. Built in 1817 and donated to the AGO by the Boultons, a prominent Canadian family at the time, the Grange Room is technically older than Canada itself, and it’s the perfect classic backdrop for tea time, an old world tradition in itself.

Serving up three carefully crafted exclusive bespoke Sloane Tea blends and a seasonal menu steeped in creativity, this afternoon tea is without a doubt one of the best in the city - a treat for foodies and tea lovers alike! You may even find some tea-infused flavours on the menu, like jasmine tea smoked salmon éclairs plated across caviar trimmed devilled eggs, Earl Grey infused shortbread or Masala Chai spiced madeleines. Served amongst ancient books and rich historic details, the menu also often includes afternoon tea staples like vegetable club on pain au lait with garlic boursin, smoked turkey on light rye with maple mustard and passion fruit chocolate mousse. No doubt inspired by their daily surroundings, one of the qualities that makes the Afternoon Tea program at the AGO so unique is that both the experience and the menu itself is approached from the point of view of art. Whether it's the elegance at play in the china used for service or the constant creativity put forth in the menu, the experience is like no other.

To make this offering even sweeter, the AGO hosts an annual themed Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea! This year’s concept is inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe, with seatings at 12:30, 2:30 and 3pm both Saturday and Sunday. Why not delight the important ladies you love with a tea service to remember, followed by an afternoon taking in art? You can find more information and book your table here.

Of course the AGO also rents out some of their most special spaces for private events, and we were lucky to host a very special baby shower in The Grange Room itself a few months ago. If you’re craving an inside peek at the AGO’s beautiful tea time offering, or hoping to plan an event of your own, you’re in luck! Today we’re sharing all the details from our truly gorgeous afternoon spent welcoming the newest member of the Sloane family, baby Dante Valentin!

Fitted with lush florals from Blush and Bloom and a custom 3 tiered Earl Grey-infused blackberry vanilla sponge cake with buttercream frosting by Nadia and Co. (topped with delicate handmade sugar flowers and golden elephants wearing sugar flower crowns no less), Sloane’s Founder Hoda Paripoush put together a truly magical event filled with talented, intelligent women and divine details on every surface. When the day was done, each attendee received a mini tea caddy and custom hand piped cookies by local cookie artist Hello Baked, topped with the signature gold Sloane elephant emblem - a perfect pairing for a perfect afternoon. Photographer and friend Gillian Gillespie of Sounds Like Yellow Photography captured the set up so delightfully that we simply had to share some of our favourite details here, just in time for Mother’s Day!
